We found the Umbrella memorial yesterday and was curious what the story behind it is? I mean obviously it’s a memorial thing and we saw the plaques and the crosses. I was wondering how long it’s been there, who put it there, etc. And then why does BLM allow things like this to stay when they remove other things like disco ball?

It's called the "Satellite Palapa Bar". We just seen it for the first time this season, but I recall it's been there since around 2020-21?

More folks "In the know" can chime in.

Maybe that's why it remains? Because it keeps getting moved?

I hope this doesn't end up like the troll hut.

May the people in the know, keep it to themselves.

It's been there for 4 or 5 years maybe more.
I don't know if the BLM knows or cares about it because it's not a public gathering place and it's a little hard to find.
If you know the location don't let the public know.

We stumbled across it leaving @ChEFF camp to go find @Bansh88 who just left on his ATC70s LOL

We hit it every trip. Always made for a fun ride for our kids as they got older.
We clean it up most times. Remove bullshit garbage that people insist on attaching to such things.
I never post on Facebook about it.

Location, location, location. Like mentioned above, it's hard to find and totally out of the way. Terrible spot to watch the sunset and other than for a very small handful of people, it's not on the way to anywhere in particular. Cool spot. Not 100% certain, but I do not think it was originally installed as a memorial. But, just like everything else, plaques and memorials continue getting mounted to everything that doesn't blow away in a good wind.

Disco ball got too big for its britches and became a liability. Too many strikes against it: 1. It was on socials more often than not 2. Easily accessible for them to remove with little effort 3. Videos of hundreds of cars and people gathered with fireworks, a DJ, and God knows what else... 4. The permanent smudge pot install shortly before it's demise sealed the deal imo... way too much liability in that one.

Redneck swing was a lawsuit waiting to happen in a ridiculously stupid high traffic area, easily accessible area for removal. Teeter-totter was well built but lasted less than a month in an easily accessible area for removal. The Palapa/Shady Eye lasted a couple season but was easily accessible for removal. Sensing a theme? :)

There's been numerous others that have been pulled out of the dunes, some almost immediately and some after a couple of months or too much social media exposure.

Swingset... not a clue why they let that one stay. I'd bet if someone mounted a permanent smudge pot there like they did disco ball it'd get removed.

Brawley Slide Hotshot memorial... they've never messed with that one and it hasn't become a social media menace to society.

Veterans Flag Pole... that box is an artifact and has been there since ~1947, long before the ISDRA became the ISDRA. The flag pole mounted to it has been flying Old Glory there for 26 years.
