The term "robot" was introduced by Czech writer Karel Čapek in 1920 in his play "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots).
However, Karel Čapek himself admitted that the word was actually coined by his brother, the painter and writer Josef Čapek. Karel was unsure how to name the artificial workers in his play and consulted his brother, who suggested the word “robot.”

Origin of the word:

Robot” comes from the Old Slavic word “robota”, which means “labor,” “work,” or “servitude.” In the Czech language at the time, robota referred to the compulsory labor that peasants were required to perform for their feudal lords — essentially unpaid, forced labor.

Context:

In the play R.U.R., the “robots” are not metal machines, but artificially created biological beings, designed to work in place of humans — something more like the predecessors of modern humanoid artificial beings.
