i have a stuck pin and need to do some work on a track and idler on my 22 ton excavator need to remove a track pin, i hear i need a 50-100 ton portable press, there is even a C clamp version. was thinking of making my own for $300-350 in parts and my time but it is possible someone here know of one i could rent ?

some of my friends told me to flame cut out a hole in the track pin and then knock it out, and used dry ice and a torch to install it but would prefer not to have to beat it out and install it like that

yeah if i did it all the time it wouldnt bother me but would rather do it cold

just watched the video, i don't know why they didn't try to remove pins with that press? the copper tube thing was genius

looks like a big project and had no idea of how big that track press was---its huge!!

I watched that whole video and it was fantastic! smiled the whole time that guy reminded me of myself my excavator is 5 tons heavier but would expect about the same process. he is smart but his reasoning is a little off on why it doesn't need to be there. what the bolt and the preloaded assembly helps is so that the idler can fit 4 more inches in so you have more clearance to assemble the track pins, it is true it doesn't matter if he can assemble the track, but if he can't, then he will need to pretension that assembly (or possibly push the idler and track in with the other excavator while putting the pin in)

very well put together video!!

You’ll want the press. This guy made one:

Very good channel for all sorts of farm fixes and how things work. He is incredibly patient and works hard to show how something works or how to go about fixing it when it doesn't.

Yep, I’ve watched most of his shit. Makes me want to do more with my land.

Back in another life, a 100 ton hydraulic press was a "Must have"
on my truck. Sometimes that was not enough.
Cat tractors can be tough.

And so it begins, this thing is huge. Pins are already ordered

Why a bottle jack? Hard to imagine you don’t have an Enerpak? You can get any size jack head you need. And they have all kinds of press units, hollow/pull thru heads, etc We have jack heads up to 500t at work.

i have a porta power unit but the wrong type of ram with it. i was trying to do this on the cheap like the Farmcraft101 guy did as i will really not have any use for it down the road

You can rent heads and presses. I don't know what's in your area. Some of the bigger lifting/rigging rental shops or rental yards offer this type of stuff

Just saw this for rent on Facebook 1 week for 600
I’m going to have to do some calling. Thanks for keeping an eye out and helping me make decisions. I’m not sure what I will find once I take the first one apart. Looks like there are a few seals and a tube and a pin per link. Not sure but thinking grease should be in each tube. So I may get extra industrious and want to do all pull off all the pads and service each link. A pin, tube and two seals is $150 and there are 49 links. I would never buy all of them as it would be cheaper to buy a $4000 chain new. One of my friends said to cut the pin down a little bit in the center. Like leave the 1.5” per side alone and cut down where it moves. I could just start coming apart very quickly.

It’s my understanding that most excavator tracks are not lubricated and that lack of use results in locked up pins due to rust
You can oil the tracks from the outside and then store machine on wood blocks to keep tracks off the wet ground
