I'm not up on the area like I used to be. The coastal commission were a big driver in the push to close the area. Environmental angles were a tool. The environmentalists were happy to help.Pretty sure it's got more to do with the Environazi Orgs than the actual residents...there are not enough of the residents to make a difference, it's the usual suspects....
As of May 2026, the area of Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) south of Arroyo Grande Creek is closed to OHV use and camping. The closure began April 14, 2026, following a court ruling regarding endangered species protection. There is no set, guaranteed date for reopening, as it depends on receiving federal permits.
Current Status and 2026 Outlook:
- Closure Details: The area south of Arroyo Grande Creek is closed to all vehicle access and OHV use.
- Reopening Trigger: The closure remains in effect until a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) is completed and an Incidental Take Permit (ITP) is issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
- Projected Timeline: While some reports suggest a potential, unofficial hope for reopening by late May 2026, others indicate the process could take longer.
- What's Open: Limited day-use vehicle access remains available north of Arroyo Grande Creek, with daily vehicle passes capped at 1,000.
